Chesterfield Inlet Travel Guide

The original Arctic community of Chesterfield Inlet provides its visitors with an experience of a lifetime. The historic community carved out of the barren Arctic tundra invites tourists from all over the world to visit historic Inuit sites, go whale watching, fish for Arctic Char, view polar bear in their natural surroundings, hunt for Caribou and sample the culture and the hospitality of the Inuit people.

A major attraction of Northern Canada and Chesterfield Inlet is its clear night skies. When conditions are right the night skies erupt into a moving and dazzling display of colour and light. The best time to view aurora is around the equinox (March, September, and October) because this time of year offers the best trade-off between mild weather and dark skies. During the summer months, night skies are not dark enough to view aurora, and in mid-winter temperatures in the -40 degree range make outdoor aurora viewing somewhat unpleasant.
