The Blackwood Gallery

The Blackwood Gallery is a contemporary art gallery situated on the Mississauga campus of the University of Toronto (UTM).

(Galleries/ Exhibits/Shows, Public Art Gallery)
Opened in 1969 as the Erindale College Art Gallery—making it the first public art gallery in the Peel region—the Gallery was renamed in 1992 in honour of Canadian artist David Blackwood who was artist-in-residence at UTM from 1967-1971 (www.davidblackwood.com). The Blackwood family marked the occasion by making a significant gift of art works which remains a cornerstone of the Blackwood’s permanent collection. The Blackwood houses just over 450 works by Canadian artists including Michael Snow, Vera Frenkel, Rebecca Belmore, Tom Dean, Carl Beam, and Charles Pachter, as well as a substantial collection of David Blackwood prints, and a collection of Inuit prints and sculptures.

Over the years, the Blackwood Gallery has spread its reach across the UTM campus. In addition to the main gallery space in the Kaneff Building, we operate the e-Gallery in the CCIT Building. The light box on the outside of South Building was originally a commissioned work by artist Bernie Miller entitled Five Minute Mirror, Miller donated the light box to the Blackwood so that other artists could use it to show back-lit projects, from time to time returning to Miller’s original work.

In addition to its exhibition schedule, the Blackwood presents a number of special projects, including publications, lectures, screenings, symposia, conferences, student work experience opportunities, and Runnning With Scissors, a children’s summer camp.
