A Glimpse Into Life 200 Years Ago
We hope to re-open for our regular season in late June or early July 2024. In May and June 2024, it may be possible to arrange a tour in advance, if we are given enough advance warning and can find volunteers to help out.
But… We will be open on 18 May for Loyalist Day in Saint John. We are part of a community effort to Celebrate the first arrival of the Refugees, often referred to as the Loyalists, from the American War of Independence in 1783. In 1784 the two communities established by the Refugees, the towns of Parr and Carleton, were incorporated into the City of Saint John on 18 May 1785!

The New Brunswick historical society is raising money to bring Dr. John F. Stevenson’s sword home. Stevenson, born in St. Andrews, attending Harvard Medical school and served as a surgeon in the Union Army’s 29th Connecticut Infantry. The 29th was one of the many units where the rank and file were free black men who had volunteered to defend the Union. Dr Stevenson died in service and his remains are buried in St. Andrews, New Brunswick. The New Brunswick Historical Society hopes to be the custodian of this important artifact and make it available for display in museums in the province. Thousands of men from Canada’s Maritime provinces served in the U.S. Civil War, including Dr. David Merritt who was born in what is now Loyalist House in Saint John in 1829. The Stevenson sword has great significance to the history of New Brunswick and deserves a home here. Our final goal is to raise $7000 to acquire this unique artefact and to construct a secure display case.
