High Level is a town in northern Alberta, located 733 kilometres north of Edmonton, Alberta and about 725 kilometres south of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. It is located in the Municipal District of Mackenzie, at the intersection of Mackenzie Highway (Highway 35) and Highway 58. The area surrounding High Level is known for its oil reserves and forests.
The young vibrant community was born as a crossroads on the new Mackenzie Highway to the north in 1942. Earlier, trails went from Hay Lakes to Meander River and Ft. Vermilion and points in between used by Dene, Beaver and Cree peoples and fur traders. Today, High Level's rich resources of forestry, oil and gas and cleared agricultural land bring prosperity to the town and region.
High Level is a transportation and service centre of approximately 4,199 persons for a large trading area of northwestern Alberta of over 22,000 people.
High Level provides a solid core of community services, provincial government branch offices, retail shopping, industry services, schools, a college, a new hospital, swimming pool and arena among many other facilities. In addition there is a long list of active community organizations and service groups.
